Two weeks after the on-site written interview, I got an email that I did really well on the exam! That was a great relieve since I had my doubts. They want to setup a telephone interview with the Austin headquarters but before then, they want a copy of my college diploma or transcript.
I went to Berkeley website to get information on obtaining diploma and/or transcript. Since I had the choice, I wanted to send them my diploma instead of my transcript for reasons I’ll explain later. The problem was, I never picked up my college diploma! I came out to Shanghai right after I graduated in summer 2001 and Berkeley didn’t have diplomas printed out at the time. Since then, I never went back to Berkeley to pick it up. When I went to the website, it said that all diplomas not picked up after 5 years are destroyed. That meant, my diploma was shredded up and disposed in some landfill! To order a new diploma would be expensive and take at least a month to process/print.
My only option was to send NI my college transcripts which I was hesitant because I have a complicated college history. If coursework and grades were what they were looking for, then I’d have to send transcripts from 3 or 4 different schools! (I went to SF Conservatory of Music and took GE courses from various community colleges before transfering to U.C. Berkeley) Imagine all the paperwork and process of ordering and sending transcripts to China! I figured that NI would have settled for a diploma (as proof of graduation), so I decided to order just my Berkeley transcript. To speed up the process, I had it sent to my sister’s home in California and asked her to scan/email it to me. The process took only three days, thankfully, and I was able to setup a telephone interview with the Texas headquarters, the next step in the interview process.
