Currently there are 12 people in NISH Tech Comm, which stands for National Instruments Shanghai Technical Communications. NISH Tech Comm is divided into two groups — the technical writers group and the localization group. Technical writers document all the products that our engineers create. Localization group consists of localization engineers and translators. Together, they translate both software and documents to Simplified Chinese.
The other day, I was just looking at the gender ratio and was quite surprised to discover that the gender ratio in Tech Comm is exactly 1:1. There are 3 female technical writers, 3 male technical writers, 3 female localization, and 3 male localization. It’s not that NI goes out of their way to provide equal opportunity that the gender ratio must be 1:1. It just so happens that they hired the right people and the male/female ratio was equal. That’s certainly not the case in engineering or HR. Engineering is dominated by men and HR is mostly women. Actually, I don’t think there are any men in HR! I did see a few female engineers but they’re way outnumbered.
