Updated (3/29/08): My typical day as a technical writer post is here.
Recently, I discovered and subscribed to I’d Rather Be Writing, a blog about technical writing. There are many great articles on various technical communications topics and I really enjoy reading them. Since technical writing is not very popular in China, but also being new to the technical writing profession, it really helps to read what other technical writers have to say about their work. I still have a lot to learn about technical writing, so my blog might not be the best source for the profession. I’m just here blogging about my job, life at National Instruments (NI), what I do, what I’m learning, and my aspiration to be a great technical writer.
I’m probably one of the few and lonely technical writing bloggers in China. If you google technical writer shanghai, this blog shows up on the first result page even though I started this blog only three months ago! I hope more people will join me in the technical writing blogosphere in China.
Today, I’d Rather Be Writing blogger wrote a great article about a typical day as a technical writer. I was going to blog about this topic but haven’t had the time. For now, readers who are interested in learning more about technical writing can read this article and get an idea of what a typical day is like for a technical writer. Despite what you might think, technical writers do not write all day. Most of our time are spent researching, learning, working with developers, playing with the products we are writing about, and reviewing our documentation. In the future, I will write an article about my typical day as a technical writer at NI Shanghai.

Hi Susan,
Nin hao! It’s nice to see your blog. I have been searching for some China based technical writers, as I hold experience both in Chinese language translation as well as technical writing. So your blog came as a pleasant surprise to me.
Hope to talk to you soon; you can also mail me at sengupta_subhajit@hotmail.com. I am mostly available in MSN with the same id.
Regards,
Subhajit Sengupta
