The company had an annual party last week at a restaurant in Zhang Jiang High-Tech subway station. The evening was filled with exciting performances and skits put together by different departments and centers. The R&D center (where I work) puts together the best performance every year, or so I was told and recruited to be a member of this year’s starring cast.
The story this year is about Blue Bird company (that is, National Instruments) and scenes from this past year, set in the Tang Dynasty. I was one of the two DTTV news anchors in the opening scene, translating into English the bilingual Chinese news program. The skit director wrote the script only in Chinese so I was given the task of translating the impossible—cultural context, historical narratives, famous figures, and important events—of which I knew nothing of. Thus, I had my share of fun and produced the worst possible translation that mar the very department I work in (technical communications). Oh well. We had our laughs.
And so it is, the Sugar Dynasty.
