Today, I learned the shortcut key to typing the em dash(—). It’s Alt-0151 (use the number pad on the right) and should work on most Windows application. Unfortunately the shortcut key doesn’t work on the laptop I’m using right now to type this post because the keyboard doesn’t have a number pad. But aside that, I am very happy to learn of this time-saving shortcut key! Before, whenever I had to type the em dash, I’d go to Google and search “em dash.” The first entry is a Wikipedia entry, which is blocked in China, so I’d go to the second entry. It’s an an entry on using em dashes and en dash from a website called Get It Write. Then I’d look for an example of em dash and copy/paste to whatever document or article I’m working on. It’s a pain because I use the em dash quite often in documentation and I didn’t know any other way to spit out the em dash on the keyboard. Now, all I have to do is hold down the “Alt” key and enter 0151 on the number pad! Works like magic!
