Rate This Article:“So you’re a geek?”
“I guess, but I don’t really like that word.”
“Why not?”
“Geek sounds like nerd.”
“Oh no no. . . we have to change your mind here.
“I’m from the 80’s and geek is never a good thing. I was in the heavy metal band. I wasn’t a geek”
“The word has changed. The word geek is all about being passionate about something. You’re passionate about what you do so you’re a geek.”
“Can we say like knowledgeable or guru or something like that?”
“No. Geek. The word has changed. It no longer has a negative connotation.”
“Well okay, I mean, you’re from Geek Brief TV, so I guess that would make sense.”
“Just agree with me.”
“I’m a geek.”

I agree! I am definitely a geek, but I’m not sure it has positive meaning for non-geeks.

I think it’s on its way to being positive for non-geeks. I get emails from people all the time saying they wouldn’t consider themselves a geek, but started watching the show for one reason or another, then all of a sudden they realize “Wow, I understand this stuff. I am a geek!” That’s the best part of doing the show!
I also see people’s reactions to the word changing from turning their nose up when you say I say I’m a geek to a laugh. Not a making fun of me kind of laugh, but a giggle and intrigue. I see that as progress.
