Smashing Magazine published an article, Table of Contents: Creative and Beautiful Examples, with a gallery of TOC images from various publication. Great images and examples of how creative you can be when creating table of contents!
Unfortunately, I’m a technical writer and I don’t have the luxury of being as creative when creating TOCs for documentation. Most of the help I write are online help, either in CHM format or HTML format posted online. The standard TOC is (and has to be) very simple and plain. Nothing as exciting as the TOCs shown in the Smashing Magazine article. And there’s a reason why that is because usability is a big issue. While TOCs can be pretty and creative, the design can be a little distracting.
