One Week in New York City
241 visits, 1 today
I was in New York City for a week last week visiting family. After living in Shanghai for 7+ years, every trip back to the U.S. is always filled with lots of good food and interesting observations about the American life. It’s hard not to act and look like a total F.O.B. when I’m in the land of the free!
Eating Through NYC
- There’s a mom and pop bagel shop on every block in NYC. Bagels with sun dried tomato cream cheese. Yum!
- $2 hot dogs at every corner.
- French cruller, my favorite type of donut!
I had Pinkberry for the first time! - New York-style pizza with real cheese and real tomato sauce (not ketchup).
- There are restaurants that actually have gluten-free menus!
The American Life (in NYC)
- Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Dean & Deluca. Premium and organic food for the health nuts. I can’t call myself a health nut, but I sure broke the bank shopping at these places. Everything is properly labeled! Heaven for the wife of someone who’s allergic to everything!
- The number of people walking in their dog(s) AND picking/cleaning up after them.
- Free Internet access everywhere.
Being able to access every website! - Super-fast Internet connection!!
- You can drink water straight from the tap.
- Metro system that runs 24/7.
- $25 for a unlimited-ride week pass.
- Graffiti everywhere.
- Clean public restroom with free toilet paper.
- The amount of meat people eat.
- The number of obese Americans.
- The size of obesity!
- I forgot that it’s rude to stare in America.
Places to See
American Museum of Natural History. Four floors of exhibition that costs you whatever-you-want-to-pay for admission. I was there for an afternoon and covered only the first floor. - Metropolitan Museum of Art. Amazing collection of art from since the beginning of humanities. New York Public Library. I don’t even know if public libraries exist in China.
- Nintendo World at Rockefeller Plaza.
- NBC Experience Store at Rockefeller and get a celebrity’s autography. I met Milo Ventimiglia!
FAO Schwartz on Fifth Avenue. So many pretty toys and they’re all made in China. - Apple Store on Fifth Avenue.
- Central Park. The true color of green unlike what you get at Century Park in Pudong, Shanghai.
- Union Square. Free food samples and farmers market throughout the week.
- Carnegie Hall. Life before I was a technical writer and an educator.
- Steinway Hall. I had one in college, loaned to me by the school, and I slept under it. I want to own before I die.
Sony Wonder of Technology. Fun (and free) museum to try out and play with some cool technology. - Little Italy. Yummy street Italian food.

I go to NY every year for family reasons. I love it, I really do, above all for its tech shops full of bargains. Anyway I would not spend a single day more than the onesI get from my summer holidays overe there ( i usually go there in the summertime). It is too crazy for me. I need quiteness and peace.
