Wheelchair Powered by Your Thoughts (and LabVIEW)

Check out this YouTube video of a wheelchair controlled by your thoughts! A group of engineering students from the University of Illinois developed an amazing technology that interprets the brain’s speech signals.  And what’s even cooler is that this technology uses LabVIEW, the product I write documentation for!

From their website Audeo.com:

The Audeo is being developed to create a human-computer interface for communication without the need of physical motor control or speech production. Using signal processing, unpronounced speech representing the thought of the mind can be translated from intercepted neurological signals…
… The proposed solution is a featherweight wireless device resting over the vocal cords capable of transmitting neurological information from the brain. Using data analysis, this information can be processed into synthesized speech or a menu selection capable of conveying the basic necessities of human life.

This technology was featured in one of last year’s NI Week. Here’s the video from the keynote.

That’s great, it should help paralyzed people a lot. I can’t wait for them to implement similar technologies in video games and PCs.
