10 Google Search Tips

Here are ten tips and tricks for using Google search engine.

  1. Exact Phrase. Use quotations (“) around the keywords to search for the exact phrase.

  2. Synonyms. Use the tilde symbol (~) before the keyword to search for similar things.

  3. Type of Files. Use filetype:<enter file extension> to search for a particular type of files.

  4. Numerical Range. Use  <number>…<number> to search within a numerical range.

  5. Exclude Keywords. Use (-) to exclude keywords that you don’t want.

  6. Movie Reviews. Use movie:<name of movie> or film:<name of movie> to search for movie reviews.

  7. Dictionary. Use define:<keyword> to look up the definition of a word in Google’s built-in dictionary.

  8. Conversion Tool. Use <number> <unit> in <different unit> to convert from one unit to another. Works for currency and measurements.

  9. Spell Checker. Use spell:<keyword> to check the spelling of a word you’re not sure how to spell.
