One really cool thing about being part of Google is being able to eat dog food. What ‘eating dog food’ means is that companies use their own products as a way of demonstrating confidence in their products as well as for testing purposes. I wrote a post about eating dog food at my previous job before.
So here at Google, eating dog food includes using products that have released (like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs) and testing products and features before they release to the public.
Every day, I get a bunch of emails about products and features that are in the development phase or nearing launch date. Googlers are asked to ‘dog food’ these products to help the development team discover bugs and kinks and fix them before releasing to the public. Obviously, many of these new and upcoming products and features have not been publicly revealed, thus highly confidential.
I love being able to hear, learn, and test these new products and features! One dog food I’m most looking forward to getting my hands on is mentioned in the official Google Mobile Blog. I won’t be able to blog much about it other than what’s already made public.
